Mangiati vivi! (1980)

One of the less gruesome cannibal tales. A woman is searching for her missing sister and she finds hope in the folly of a dead hit-man who has a film on him. The film shows some sadistic torture and a brief cameo by her sister taken by a documentary film crew who obviously didn’t make it out. She then leaves for the jungle joined by cannibal film regular Robert Kerman (playing Mark Butler), where they meet up with the standard Cannibal tribe and a Jim Jones like cult leader. Of course escape is next to impossible with the always-hungry cannibals waiting them out and the crazy followers of the suicide cult leader ready to eat them on command.

Here’s a National Geographic style documentary that’s alternately exploitive and informative. The film presents a wide variety of ways that humans interact with nature. It depicts the actual footage of a careless man (Pit Dernitz) leaving the safety of his car to film lions close up and ends up being their dinner. Other highlights include natives humping the ground in hopes of bringing life to the land, various big game hunting and last but not least naked hippies.

A photographer on assignment in the rain forest is ambushed and held slave by a primitive tribe, until the chief’s daughter chooses him as her groom. After being initiated by various tortures, he becomes a part of the tribe and helps them against modern dangers and a cannibal tribe they’re at war with.

This time around, the voyage includes vivisection, recreations of old west lynchings, a visit to a mortician’s school, transvestites, wild sex clubs and alligator hunting.

Nominally a documentary, this film combines a number of unrelated sequences (both real and staged) — including a South Pacific “cargo cult”, the ritual slaughter of a bull, tribal dances and rituals, and a visit to an ornate pet cemetery — all focused on the lurid, sensational, and eccentric.
